Surgeon, professor, researcher

Born in 1974 in Bafra, Samsun, Prof. Dr. Burçin Çelik completed primary school at Hırka-i Şerif Primary School in Fatih, Istanbul, and secondary and high school at Cağaloğlu Anatolian High School, then graduated from Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1998 and began residency at the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine, the same year.

After qualifying as a thoracic surgeon in March 2004, Prof. Çelik joined Samsun Mehmet Aydın State Hospital, and in 2006 founded the Thoracic Surgery Clinic at Samsun Dr. Kamil Furtun Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Hospital. In February 2007 came the start of an academic career as Assistant Professor at the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Sivas Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Medicine, with military service completed as a medical officer at Gülhane Military Medical Academy in Ankara.

In October 2008 Prof. Çelik returned to the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Ondokuz Mayıs University as Assistant Professor, becoming Associate Professor in 2011 and Professor in 2018. In 2013 Prof. Çelik was a visiting faculty member at the Duke University Cardiothoracic Clinic in the United States, training in video-assisted thoracoscopic and robotic surgery.

Prof. Çelik’s clinical and academic work centres on minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer: video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS). At Ondokuz Mayıs University this work combines patient care, residency training and scientific research.
